In the fall of 2024 I got a job working at the University of Oregon Craft Center, a program that operates several different kinds of art studios: ceramics, 2D, fibers, photography, wood, and glass/metal. My job was in the hot shop, the shop dealing with glass and metal.
About a month into my work there, the Craft Center decided to hire a new hot shop manager, as the role had been empty for a while. They chose an excellent glassblower, who I came to see as a close mentor.
Over the course of the year, I got to learn on the job, blowing glass and learning about the process, which I felt and still feel ridiculously lucky for, and I looked forwards to biking to work each day
Now that I've graduated, I'm lamenting not having an amazing hot shop and world class tutelage as easily accessible, however, I recently blew some glass in a local hot shop, and I'm hoping that there will be some collaboration this summer.
